MEDIA LOSER: Former Fox News Figure Cathy Areu
Journalist and former Fox News figure Cathy Areu was arrested in Miami, Florida on charges that she allegedly kidnapped and exploited her elderly mother for money.
According to the Miami Herald, Areu -- often referred to as the “Liberal Sherpa” -- was arrested on Friday with charges ranging from fraud, kidnapping, and exploitation. She has not been convicted.
Investigators claim Areu could have taken more than $224,000 from her 88-year-old mother including funds from a reverse mortgage, and from numerous bank accounts and credit cards opened in her name.
Areu allegedly attempted to use power of attorney twice in attempts to place her mother in assisted living facilities and control her assets. The Florida Department of Children and Families released Areu's mother both times after concluding she was not in need of that type of care.
According to a Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office press release, a judge signed for Areu's arrest in June, and she is believed to have been evading arrest in Mexico. While Areu has not yet been convicted, the investigation has been ongoing since 2019, according to the Miami Herold.
Areu's mother reportedly denied signing a quit claim deed that turned her home over to her daughter. Areu, on the other hand, claimed other people were exploiting her mother, who was suffering from brain damage or dementia.
Whether or not Areu kidnapped and exploited her elderly mother getting slapped with those charges is already pretty grim. |
