The Senate has confirmed lawyer Eugene Scalia, son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, to serve as the next US labor secretary. The confirmation was on a 53-44 party-line vote, with Republicans touting his experience in labor law and Democrats saying he had fought against workers on behalf of his corporate clients. California Assembly Bill 5, which constrains employers from classifying workers as independent contractors, will affect many freelance journalists, including writers, editors, photographers and cartoonists.
