Hi, Gavin Newsom finally has the big job, running one of the most important states in United States — and arguably one of the most important economies in the world, too. He has a lot on his plate. As one of the high-profile faces of “the resistance” to the Trump administration, Newsom is determined to lay the groundwork for a single-payer health care system, address California’s clean energy future, wrangle the state’s tech behemoths, and confront the consequences of big tech on the world, including housing, inequality, and the future of work, privacy, and democracy. There is also the challenge of keeping innovation alive in the Golden State, and fending off threats from countries like China and India over who will dominate the next internet age. As has always been the case with California, the struggles and opportunities playing out in the state are harbingers of what is coming next in the nation. Newsom will be a key player in debates about the future, from the new state privacy bill to self-driving cars to what it means to be a human in the age of artificial intelligence. Newsom came to our conference stages when he was mayor of San Francisco. We are thrilled to have him join us at Code to talk about all this and more. You can join us June 10-12 for that talk and many more at Code’s new location — The Phoenician in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kara and Peter |
