Last night I went to sleep by my girl My friend Lynn, a personal trainer, has given me a list of twelve useful exercises to strengthen the core muscles and improve the sense of balance and I’ve been thinking about doing them, meanwhile I’ve been concerned with other matters, such as which came first, the can or the can opener. This question has no relevance to my life or yours and yet — what is the relevance of relevance at this point in my life? I need questions to answer, otherwise I lie in bed at night with a song repeating in my head, such as “Please Please Me” or “When They Ring Those Golden Bells,” both of them infectious. So the question of can openers is how I spare myself from thinking “Last night I said these words to my girl.” Go to Garrison Keillor and Friends on Substack to read the rest of THE COLUMN >>> Did you know that you can read Garrison's column in theUnion Leader & other small newspapers? Contact your local paper and let them know you'd like to see Garrison's column there, too! |

This week on A Prairie Home Companion Fall has officially begun and the leaves are changing. One thing that is not changing is that we are here every Saturday to share a classic program from the PHC archive. This week, we will beat back the cooler weather by welcoming the warm harmonies of The Cactus Blossoms, ripen up a bit with The California Honeydrops, be transfixed by the angelic voice of Christine DiGiallonardo, plus learn a bit about the history of Ulysses, the names people choose, and North Dakota wine; plus Silver Lining and Grandeur featuring our talented cast and an update on all the latest happenings in Lake Wobegon … honey, could you ask for more? Highlights: Richard Dworsky scales the keyboards on “Blue October,” Christine DiGiallonardo and Garrison dazzle on “Mama Said” and “Names,” The Cactus Blossoms regale the audience on “A Sad Day to Be You” and “Adios, Maria,” plus the aforementioned sketches Ulysses, Grandeur, plus English Majors and Silver Linings. All in all, it’s a pretty good show, and we hope you join us. The link is posted on Saturdays at 5 p.m. CT each week on our Facebook page (also below, for your enjoyment anytime). The Lake Wobegon Virus by Garrison Keillor Garrison’s bestselling book is released in softcover on October 12th! This Lake Wobegon satire is chock-full of laughs and has been enchanting fans since last September. Now it arrives in paperback. SAVE $5 For a Limited Time In his newest Lake Wobegon novel, Garrison Keillor takes us back to the small prairie town where for so long American readers and listeners have found laughter as well as the wry airing of our foibles and most familiar desires and fears — a town where, as we know, “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” A mysterious virus has infiltrated the good people of Lake Wobegon, transmitted via unpasteurized cheese made by a Norwegian bachelor farmer, the effect of which is episodic loss of social inhibition. Mayor Alice, Father Wilmer, Pastor Liz, the Bunsens and Krebsbachs, formerly taciturn elders, burst into political rants, inappropriate confessions, and rhapsodic proclamations, while their teenagers watch in amazement. Meanwhile, a wealthy outsider is buying up farmland for a Keep America Truckin’ motorway and amusement park, estimated to draw 2.2 million visitors a year. Clint Bunsen and Elena the hometown epidemiologist to the rescue, with a Fourth of July Living Flag and sweet corn feast for a finale. ALSO AVAILABLE: The Lake Wobegon Virus is also available in other formats, including an autographed hardcover and an audio edition with Garrison reading the story.
