Calvin’s Best Friend From Chicken Soup for the Soul: Me and My Dog By Susan C. Willett When a cat chooses to be friendly, it’s a big deal because a cat is picky. ~Mike Deupree Calvin walked into the family room and stopped, lifted up his nose and sniffed. His tail twitched. Something smelled different. On the couch lay my dog Tucker, his head encircled by a plastic veterinary cone large enough to pick up signals from space. He had just come home from the vet, where he had been treated for a split toenail. The sensitive quick was exposed — a very painful condition, particularly in the middle of winter when below-freezing temperatures exacerbated his discomfort.
