TOP OF THE AGENDA | Canada will protect its self-determination, says King |
|
| | King Charles delivers his speech to Canada's parliament. Credit: PA News | King Charles has said Canada is "strong and free" as he opened the country's parliament, in what will inevitably be seen as an answer to President Donald Trump's remarks about making it the 51st US state. The King said Canada wanted relations to benefit "both sovereign nations" and that its government would protect its people's "self-determination". Mark Carney, Canada's PM, later hailed a "successful visit". Read our take on the key points, as well as royal correspondent Sean Coughlan's analysis of what messages were sent, and to whom. | Hope tinged with scepticism as Kurd militants end war with Turkey | | A picture of jailed Kurdish militant leader Abdullah Ocalan held during a rally in Diyarbakir in February. Credit: Reuters | From Our Own Correspondent: The Kurdistan Workers Party announced earlier this year that it would end its 40-year insurgency against Turkey. It now says its struggle for self-determination can be solved by politics. But what is the feeling in the Kurdish heartlands? |

| | Storm clouds rolled in over the ancient city of Diyarbakir hours after the PKK announced it was putting down its weapons. We ran for cover from hail stones, joining regulars mulling the news in a café.
"Anyone – from any side - who will stop the bloodshed, I salute them," says Mehmet, 80, tipping the top of his cap. "This conflict is brother on brother. Everyone who dies is ours, whether Turkish or Kurdish."
But Nejmettin, a 65-year-old driver, expected nothing good from the Turkish government. "They been tricking us for thousands of years," he said. "I don’t believe anything will change."
The last word went to Ibrahim, 63, who was sitting on a small stool, prayer beads in hand. "No one has achieved anything," he said, with sadness. "There are no winners." |
