The irony is that it’s being ushered in by a system born deep, deep in the tropics. Gusty breezes behind Matthew send cool, dry air our way today and through much of the week. Highs should mainly be in the 60s to near 70, while some areas could see overnight lows beginning with a “3” for the first time in a long time. Today (Sunday): Sunshine increases from west to east during the morning, with maybe a lingering early-morning shower mainly east of I-95. Mostly sunny skies then prevail through afternoon as drier air filters in. Or more like “gushes” in, as a tight pressure gradient between Matthew off the coast and high pressure to our northwest creates a gusty wind. Expect winds from the north at 15-25 mph with gusts near 30-35 mph, making highs in the low-to-mid 60s feel cooler than that. Confidence: High |

Tonight: Skies remain clear overnight as moisture levels plummet, with dew points dropping into the 30s! That means we’re in for a rather crisp night, though a lingering breeze around 10-15 mph should keep temperatures from truly tanking. As it is, you may not want to leave the windows wide open, with overnight lows in the 40s to near 50. Confidence: High Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest updates. Keep reading for the forecast through midweek… Tomorrow (Columbus Day): If you’re lucky enough to have the day off, Monday looks like a fine day to enjoy away from work, as long as you’re into long sleeves and/or light jackets. Sunshine is truly abundant, and morning breeziness relaxes into the afternoon as high pressure settles in overhead. After that crisp early-morning start, temperatures by afternoon should reach highs in the 60s. Confidence: Medium-High Tomorrow night: Here comes a true autumn chill! Clear skies continue overnight and this time winds become light. That sends temperatures falling toward lows as low as the upper 30s in our outer suburbs, to the mid-to-upper 40s inside the Beltway. Confidence: Medium-High A LOOK AHEAD A pair of nice fall days are on the docket for Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure maintains control. Both days look partly sunny with Tuesday highs in the low-to-mid 60s and Wednesday highs reaching the mid-60s to near 70. Not as cool Tuesday night with lows ranging from the upper 40s to mid-50s. Confidence: Medium |
