Good morning, and welcome to Monday and the start of a new work week. It’s a big day in Cleveland, where the Republican National Convention begins. And Hillary Clinton is scheduled to speak in Minneapolis late this afternoon. We’ll have live coverage on the radio each night of the convention starting at 7 p.m. Let’s take a look at the Digest. 1.Wendell Anderson, who became Minnesota Governor at age 37, died Sunday at age 83. Anderson was a hugely popular governor for six years who enacted what came to be known as the “Minnesota Miracle” along with several other institutional changes that have endured until today. But one bad decision effectively ended his political career, and he never made the comeback that even some of his political opponents expected. (MPR News) 2.Most of Minnesota’s 38 delegates to the Republican convention won’t vote for Donald Trump on the first ballot, and even some who are pledged to the presumptive nominee say they’re doing it reluctantly. And only one of the state’s three Republican members of Congress will be in Cleveland. (MPR News) 3. Investigators still don’t know why a Marine veteran opened fire on police officers in Baton Rouge Sunday morning. Three officers were killed and three others were wounded before police killed the attacker. Baton Rouge was where police killed a man earlier this month. Video of that killing led to protests in Louisiana and nationwide. (NPR) 4. The Baton Rouge police officer killings cast a pall on the Republican Convention but also played into the opening night theme of the gathering. The first night will focus on a relatively new Trump push for “law and order,” and convention organizers said on Sunday that the theme of the first day would be "Make America Safe Again."(New York Times) 5.As he prepares to accept the Republican nomination for president, Trump and his running mate Gov. Mike Pence spoke to 60 Minutes in an interview that aired last night. Pence said Trump would make an excellent president, even though he disagrees with him on a number of issues, including international trade. As usual, Trump did most of the talking.
