Exceptional pieces by Cartier in our upcoming auction on the 29 th of May Cartier is a myth - in the field of goldsmith’s art, there is hardly a manufactory that created something equally great. In 1847 Louis-Francois Cartier took over the goldsmith's workshop of his teacher and founded the company, his son Alfred positioned himself as a business man and designer with his own jewellery line. But only with the entry of the three grandchildren, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, who joined in 1898 as partners and the company’s move to new rooms the Rue de la Paix in 1899, the company conquered a place among the most famous jewelry suppliers in the world. Cartier supplied the royal houses of England, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Siam and the money nobility worldwide with fantastic jewellery creations. Cartier's watch designs established the fame of the company as well as the famous jewelry. In the field of wristwatches, Cartier went down in history with the 'Santos', designed in 1904. But also in the field of decorative table and travel clocks, the company was one of the pioneers - both in terms of technical innovations as well as in the arts and crafts execution. With a view to competing Fabergé jewelery company in Russia - the Russian style was currently in vogue - Cartier combined engine-turned enamel, gemstones and diamonds to create distinctive, fantastically colored effects (cat nos. 62, 65). Cartier's 'Pendules Mytérieuses', whose hands seem to float on the crystal's transparent dial without seeming to connect to the movement, are among the finest in watchmaking to date, while the mechanism is cleverly hidden in carved figures made of gemstones or other decorative elements of the clock. The luxury accessories and clocks which David Cooper acquired for his collection date back to this time when the art of watchmaking and jewelry flourished; these lend lend his collection a very special splendor. |
