The modern commissary benefit, as it is known today, began on July 1, 1867, when enlisted service members were declared eligible to receive the same quality of life support that officers had enjoyed since 1825.

As we celebrate 158 years this week, DeCA remains committed to this legacy of service, supporting the military community at 235 stores in 13 countries.
