The Farmers Market Community Shares Lunar New Year Traditions

While January 1 marked the beginning of the Gregorian calendar’s New Year, millions of people around the world celebrate this annual transition with Lunar New Year. And like so many cherished holidays, Lunar New Year traditions are centered around food and family.

We spoke with farmers and food makers in the Foodwise farmers market community to find out what’s on their Lunar New Year table and what this time of year means to them, as well as what special offerings they will have at the market.

Remembering Kristie Knoll

We are sad to share that farmer Kristie Knoll passed away on January 24. Kristie and Rick Knoll have been a bright light in the farmers market community for over 30 years, and we will remember Kristie for her vibrant spirit, integrity, and care. Our thoughts are with Rick and the Knoll Farms family.

Yes, SNAP and WIC are Available at Our Markets

With threats of federal funding freezes this week, there have been concerns and confusion around food assistance benefits. Please rest assured that SNAP/EBT, Market Match, and WIC programs are still available for use at Foodwise farmers markets. We are watching closely and will keep you posted if there are changes. Volunteer of the Month: Erin Davis

Meet Erin Davis, who started volunteering with our Foodwise Teens youth development program in September 2024. Erin gives back to her community by getting her hands in the soil and sharing her passion for plants with SFUSD high school students.

For Lunar New Year, Annie Wang prepares tangyuan kits with four savory and sweet flavors, all complete with instructions for making a traditional broth. Visit Little Moon Bakehouse this Saturday in the farmers market

This February, dig into homemade Southern classics like oxtails and collard greens at Mo'Raysha's. Chef and owner Mo'Raysha Pouoa will be popping up in the market on Tuesdays and Thursdays through En2Action.
