Today is World Ocean Day.

A note from Associate Professor Adriana Vergés who features in Australia's Ocean Odyssey.

Sometimes, when I am in the ocean, it does feel like a parallel Universe. A world where gravity doesn’t have the same pull. A world with no words, with wildly different sounds and where I get to meet creatures that defy most of the rules that govern the terrestrial domain.

The sense of wonder that the ocean inspires can often create an impression of it being a different entity, a world apart. But the truth is that the ocean is anything but separate from us. We are intimately connected to it in every conceivable way. The ocean is where all life originated and is where much of the oxygen we breathe comes from. The ocean shapes our climate and our weather. It provides much of the food we eat,and draws down a lot of the carbon we emit.

What I love about Australia’s Ocean Odyssey: A journey down the East Australian Current is how beautifully itcaptures this strong connectivity within the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it, as well as the connection between the ocean and the land, and between the ocean and us.

I hope you enjoy the series as much as I have!
