ETTORE SOTTSASS
Important Ceramics and Glass Works

The auction 'Italian Design' on 10 October will offer an exceptional private collection of ceramics and glass objects by Ettore Sottsass. The offer includes not only famous and popular designs for Memphis, Milan, and Bitossi, Montelupo, but also rare limited edition glass and porcelain series.

The 1994 collection of porcelain objects, lavishly produced by the French National Manufactory of Sèvres, is almost completely represented with 13 objects. All 14 models were exhibited for the first time in 1994 at the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. The ceramics are on offer for estimated prices between 2.000 - 4.000 €. Admirable in this series is not only Sottsass' artistic design language, which made him world famous decades earlier. The technical realization also amazes connoisseurs: the interplay of opaque glazed porcelain and transparent glass, fragile vases and heavy Aigueville stone bases. The production was no less elaborate: some glazes required multiple firings at different temperatures between 680 and 1280 degrees.

Absolute highlights of the collection are extremely rare totem sculptures. Each limited to 20 pieces, the totems represent the largest ceramics ever designed by Ettore Sottsass, with heights of up to over 200 cm. The models 'Minareto' and 'Menta' are part of the series 'Mirabili' created in 1986 by Sergio Cammilli (founder of the furniture manufacturer Poltronova, Pistoia), for which he collaborated with various architects and artists.

The collection is completed with ceramics and glass designs for Memphis collections, simpler vases for Bitossi and rare Murano glass objects such as the vase object 'W' from the series 'Ventisette legni per un fiore artificiale cinese', 1995, limited to 12 pieces, and the Millennium vase 'Nebulosa' produced by Venini, limited to 99 pieces.
