Dear John,
One of the things most of my clients have in common is this feeling they are forced into reactive mode almost all of the time.
This loss of control is pervasive. But itâs not real.
You read that correctly.
Their perception is not reality.
What these folks perceive as a lack of control is actually a lack of self-esteem.
Here are five ways you can take back control (and in the process, build your self-esteem).
Make People Earn Your Time
You wouldnât walk around giving away hundred dollar bills would you?
So why do you regularly agree to meetings you know, in advance, will be a waste of your time?
Why do you allow yourself to get roped into doing things that take your most precious asset â your time â and treat it like a disposable diaper?
Start with the word âno.â If someone asks for your time, simply say:
âI donât have time budgeted for this meeting this week. But if you send me a quick summary of the conversation youâd like to have, I will try to fit it into my agenda soon.â
Yeah. I know that sounds a bit odd. But it sounds odd only because nobody says it.
Quit giving away the one thing you will never be able to get back.
Do Something That Scares The Crap Out Of You
All of us have strengths. Think about yours. What do you do really well? Now think about the most extreme application of that strength. Can you go there?
Example:
You are a great writer. You love to write. Can you enter an essay contest? Can you draft an Op-Ed and send it to the New York Times or to the Wall Street Journal?
More personal example:
I am a good public speaker. I speak to corporate audiences over 50 times each year. I wanted to really challenge myself to connect with an audience so, for several months earlier this year; I tried my hand at stand-up comedy.
This scared the hell out of me. But it also helped me learn how to connect with an audience on a whole new level.
I grew outside of my comfort zone and bolstered one of my key strengths.
Dwell On The Positive
All of us tend to focus on the one thing that doesnât go perfectly.
Itâs amazing.
Thousands of things go well for us every day. Yet we dwell on the one or two things that blow up.
Tonight, before you go to sleep, force yourself to think about five things that went well today. It can be as simple as:
âI made the perfect bowl of oatmeal this morning.â
The idea is to catch yourself doing things correctly.
Embrace Abundance
You are only one telephone call away from doubling your income.
Youâre only one meeting away from catapulting your career and your law firm to the next level.
All you need to do is figure out who the person should be on the other end of the phone or sitting across from you in the boardroom.
Once you figure that out, ask everyone you know to make an introduction. Write that person letters. Make telephone calls to him/her. Find a way to add value to his/her life and do not stop until you connect.
Learn Something New Everyday
Education has been the key to freedom for an eternity. It can lift people out of poverty and it can create a balance of power among nations.
Yet the minute we graduate from our formalized education program, most of us stop focusing on mental growth.
Donât let this happen to you.
Seek out knowledge. Be intellectually curious.
Ask good questions. Read something. Listen.
The common thread among all of these tasks is ACTION. You must aggressively ACT to take back control of your life, your business and your career.
You are the architect of your future.
Take steps to make your vision for it a reality.
Let me help you take back control of your business, your career, and your life.
During the past ten years I've offered a private mentor experience. We work together for six months and you receive unlimited access to me. I help you with the things listed above along with any other issue you have in your firm.
I provide you with confidence to help you get through the fear. I provide you with business development capability to help you grow and I help you gain clarity into your purpose.
I will be discontinuing this experience at the end of this month. There will be new offerings with new experiences but this will be the last chance for you to work with me on an unlimited basis. Why? I have a new book coming out this summer and I'm growing and expanding.
The good news is that anyone who signs up now will be grandfathered and will be able to participate in this mentor program as long as you'd like.
