Dear Friend, Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina! Charting The Path To Opportunity For many Americans, a quality education is the key to uplifting them out of poverty and placing them on the path to a better life. As someone who grew up with a single mom, mired in poverty, I understand the power of a good education. Charter schools do vital work to provide a quality education to millions of students across our nation. This National Charter Schools Week, I led 26 Senate colleagues in celebrating the impact charter schools have had on spreading academic excellence and educational freedom. Earlier this year, this crisis hit close to home when one of my own dear friends from Charleston, Alan Shao, lost his only son to a fentanyl overdose. Under President Biden’s abdication of leadership, fentanyl has flowed freely over our open southern border and devastated our communities. With the expiration of Title 42, a vital tool which helped stem the wave of illegal immigrants and drugs, the fentanyl crisis is only set to get worse. Since President Biden refuses to do his duty and protect Americans, I, along with Senate Judiciary Ranking Member Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), introduced the Alan T. Shao II Fentanyl Public Health Emergency and Overdose Prevention Act to utilize powers similar to those under Title 42 and safeguard Americans. With this legislation, the Department of Homeland Security will be able to continue to expedite the processing and removal of migrants illegally entering the country in response to the fentanyl public health emergency. Taking Steps To Secure American Citizens Abroad Click here to watch Senator Scott’s remarks and questions. The conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces has devastated the lives of Sudanese civilians and risks further instability in a region critical to our own security interests. The eruption of violence in April also jeopardized the lives of American citizens and U.S. personnel in Sudan. At this week’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, I addressed Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland and expressed concern about the U.S. foreign policy failures leading up to the current conflict and the State Department’s inability to swiftly evacuate American citizens from the latest cycle of violence in Sudan, when compared to the efforts of several other countries. I urged our State Department to step up to the plate and develop proper contingency plans at U.S. embassies to protect personnel and citizens in times of crisis. Read more about the hearing here. Putting Workers Over Big Labor Hard-working Americans in South Carolina and across our country drive the American economy. They deserve all the help they can get to climb the economic ladder and create a better life for themselves and their families. Unfortunately, with their top-down approach and outdated policies, big labor unions have made life harder, not easier, for many Americans. I wrote an op-ed detailing my landmark legislation - the Employee Rights Act - which prioritizes worker freedom over big labor unions and gives them the tools and flexibility they need to take part in the 21st-century economy. I am always committed to empowering Americans to live out their dreams. Read my op-ed here. Taking Back Our Economy At this week’s Senate Committee on Finance hearing on international tax policy, I underscored the power of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in creating economic prosperity and expressed support for continuing tax policies that promote American competitiveness on the world stage, put money back into taxpayers’ pockets, and spur investment into the American economy. In 2017, TCJA was key to spurring economic growth and increasing America’s competitiveness on the global stage. While the past three years of President Biden’s inflationary policies have crushed our economy, I will always fight for the policies that expand opportunity for Americans. Click here to watch Native South Carolinian Daniel Bunn’s questions. During the hearing, I also had the opportunity to hear testimony from tax expert and native South Carolinian Daniel Bunn. From his chaotic open border policies to a broken economy, our President has let the American people down. I highlighted solutions to these crises during an interview with Fox News’ Fox & Friends. From introducing legislation to extend the vital powers of Title 42 to standing against this President's rampant inflationary spending, I will always fight for a government that works for Americans, not against them.
