| This 'Climate Crisis Font' Shrinks as the Polar Ice Caps Melt | | | | Can a newspaper save the world? No. Can an ad agency save the world? Also no. BUT can a font save the world? Yet again, no. Still, none of us should go out without a fight, and Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat has been using all the tools at its disposal—plus inventing some new ones—to fight against the daunting tide of climate change. Previously, the newspaper and agency TBWA\Helsinki created a "Climate Pen" whose ink was made from carbon dioxide emissions. They gave the pens to world leaders at a global form hosted in Helsinki as a sort of daily reminder about the looming threat of global warming. Now the newspaper has created a typeface, The Climate Crisis Font, with the visibility of each letter being dependent on the extent of melting at the polar ice caps. Historic data fuels the font, so you can change the look by selecting from different time periods.
