TODAY'S TOP STORYCloset goldmine: Top used items with big value onlineThere's a lot of weird stuff for sale on Facebook Marketplace. It's not just old strollers, an elliptical thatβs collected dust for three years and a gross couch. We're talking drugs and, well, adult things. But if you can sift through the strange listings, lowball offers and folks who never respond, there are a lot of deals to be had β and money to be made, if you're the one selling. Insider Monkey rounded up the five hottest-selling categories on Facebook Marketplace based on keyword search interest. Let's go through the list, and I've got pro tips to help you snag a good deal or make the most cash. ποΈββοΈ Fitness equipment: 11.13M searchesBargain-priced fitness equipment may not be too good to be true. Many people don't know the actual value of what they have β or they need to dump it quickly because they're moving. That stuff is a pain to lug around. Either way, you win. Selling? Give your gear a thorough once-over so you know what you're selling. For bigger equipment, include the manufacturer name and model number if possible. For weights and all the rest, take enough pictures to make the condition clear. π‘ Rugs: 11.32M searchesLook for rugs with high-quality, natural fibers like wool, silk or cotton. They'll last the longest. If a listing doesn't include this information, ask the seller. Selling? List the dimensions so you don't have to keep fielding that question. Include high-res photos from different angles; it'll help you sell it faster. Call out imperfections, like fraying and staining, and state whether the rug comes from a smoke- or pet-free home. (These are key phrases!) π Shoes: 12.01M searchesFreshen up used shoes before wearing them. Replace the insoles if they're worn or dirty. Disinfect the insides of the shoes with spray or wipes. Baking soda and vinegar kill fungus in sneakers, and rubbing alcohol disinfects suede and leather. Selling? Think of worn shoes like used cars; they depreciate as soon as you drive them off the lot. If you wore the shoes once, list them for 50% of what you paid. Anything worn five times or more should be listed between 30% to 40% of their retail value, max. π± Phone accessories: 13.14M searchesLook for sellers who bundle phone accessories, like a few phone cases and a charger, to get the most savings. Oh, and stay away from used earbuds. Even if you find a great deal, remember they've been in someone else's ears. Selling? Make sure the accessories youβre listing are for phones currently in use. Sorry, but you can toss the charger for that mid-2000s hot-pink RAZR. (I had one, too!) π§Έ Toys and games: 69.6M searchesI must say the obvious: Don't buy used stuffed animals on Facebook Marketplace. You have no idea where they've been or what bacteria or bugs they're carrying. Lego blocks are also tempting, but keep in mind they're the toughest to clean and disinfect. Selling? Check the list of popular toys released around the holidays. Think Cabbage Patch Kids or Furbies back in the day. If you're selling a hot item or something similar, you'll get rid of them quickly and make top dollar. π«‘ Now, no matter what youβre buying or selling, you need to do it the safe way. A smart home success story in the makingRYSE started out pitching on "Dragons' Den" (think Canadian βShark Tankβ). Now, the company that received two offers is about to become known nationwide. Their product is rolling out in 100+ Best Buy stores. Early investors have already seen their share price grow over 15 times β and theyβre just getting started. RYSEβs retail distribution deal looks like the ones Ring, Nest and iRobot started with on their path to billion-dollar exits. Best Buy has made a huge bet on RYSE, and you can too. For a limited time, you can still invest in their company at $1.25/share. Learn how to invest before their name becomes known nationwide. β |
WEB WATERCOOLERπ What a load of sheet: Citigroup told some customers they'll lose access to digital accounts if they don't give up their cherished mailed paper statements. Banks are legally required to make paper statements available, so this could be illegal. Theyβre called never-updaters: Ever been told to download an update, but you donβt have enough room on your device? Join the club. As much as you might want to resist, un-updated software can make you vulnerable to hackers. So, if you canβt update, thatβs a sign you need a new device. Do you see that pink elephant? If you're a tech geek like me, you've probably heard of the term βAI hallucinationsβ β aka when chatbots make up things. How do the different bots fare? Meta's AI chatbot made up things 5% of the time, Google's chat hallucinated 27% of its answers, and ChatGPT hallucinated just 3%. π Keep on ruckin': If you've experimented with hot yoga and cold plunges, it's time to try the next fitness craze taking over Silicon Valley. βRuckingβ is when you strap on a heavy backpack and go for a long walk or hike. Carrying extra weight increases your heart rate, helping you get a better workout without all the impact of running. I'm going to try this for sure! The end of an error: Have you done it? Over half of single Americans admit to having checked up on their ex online, new research says β as did over 65% of married people. Itβs natural to be curious, but be careful not to hit βlike.β So embarrassing. πΆοΈ ChatGPT, but spicy: Elon Musk's new AI chatbot, Grok, will soon be available to X Premium Plus subscribers. Musk says Grok, trained on real-time data from X, will "answer spicy questions" that other chatbots won't. Figures. Swede dreams are made of this: A new study out of Sweden says kids under 2 should have absolutely zero screen time, and children between the ages of 2 to 5 should keep their screen time to no more than an hour a day. Yup, this includes TVs, tablets and cellphones. The research claims your kiddo spending less time staring at a screen is as good for them as eating vegetables and crossing the street safely. This is wise advice to pass along to friends and family. ποΈ Want to take care of my private island? Thatβs what one mysterious billionaire is asking β and heβs paying nearly $200,000 for the job. The requirements? You and a partner would have to transform the site into a piece of paradise and record it all for TikTok. Itβs in the Virgin Islands. Sign me up. |
DEVICE ADVICEPassword-protect your docKeeping your thoughts or diary on your PC? What about business or other professional info you donβt want others to get their hands on? Now imagine if someone was able to read all that! The simplest way to make sure someone canβt open a doc on your PC is to give that file a password. It only takes about a minute. In Microsoft Office and Google Docs, click the Help button in the menu bar.Click Help again, then type in Encrypt with Password, and your program of choice will walk you through the steps. So easy.π FYI, there's a difference between Office and Docs. For Office, a person can't open or view the file's content without a password. Docs does this, too, but it also encrypts files as they travel from your device to Googleβs servers. π When you're in a new relationship, you don't need a secure channel to talk to your partner. Communication is already encrypted. |
TECH LIFE UPGRADESSecure your home the right way: I put up cams at my new house and followed these rules: 1.) Get a view of windows and doors on the ground floor, 2.) Stick cameras higher up, like in a corner, so they can capture a wider area, and 3.) Install your video doorbell cam 48 inches off the ground. Check yourself: You donβt have to be a tech whiz to intercept Apple iMessage texts. Message forwarding, as you probably guessed, forwards messages to another device automatically. Itβs handy if you set it up but an invasion of privacy if someone else does. To check, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding. π Itβs fundamental, Watson! Project Gutenberg has 70,000 eβbooks free for the taking β legally. Donβt have a Kindle or eβreader? Put one on your phone and read instead of scrolling through the news. Hereβs βThe Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.β On time, every time: Google Maps and Apple Maps can predict traffic with eerily good results. Next time you need directions, look for the option to set your arrival time. The map app will then tell you when you must leave the house. Student in the family? A student Amazon Prime account is a heck of a lot cheaper than the regular price. Students get six months free, then half off a year ($69). |

BY THE NUMBERS36% Drop in walks since the start of the pandemic. GPS data monitored trips outside on foot and found up to 50% fewer than in 2019. Why? Working from home. My friend Sam named his dog Five Miles. This way, he can say, βI walked Five Miles today.β Heβs like that. $50,000 Price X is selling old usernames. They wonβt release a list of inactive accounts (Iβd love to be @kim), but a marketplace is coming. Gotta say, Elonβs always looking for a way to make a buck. Maybe thatβs what having 11 kids will do to you. 12 cents Cost for leaked data on U.S. service members. Duke researchers found personal info like health conditions and home addresses for thousands of active-duty military personnel. No way to stop anyone from buying this info. Scary stuff. |
WHAT THE TECH?This solves Sirius issues. |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ...The answer: A.) Segway. Introduced in 2001, it cost $5,000, but it didnβt catch on beyond niche markets like tourism and policing. Jimi Heselden purchased the company in 2009 and died just a year later, when he accidentally rode his Segway off a cliff near his estate in England. β¨ Be sure to click the link to check out todayβs sponsor, RYSE.
