Bay Area Chefs Share Their Tips and Tricks for Preventing Food Waste in the Kitchen

From sprucing up cocktails with fruit-rind infused syrups to repurposing forgotten veggies into hummus, Bay Area chefs have plenty of creative, delicious hacks to prevent and reduce food waste in the kitchen. To celebrate Earth Month and SF Climate Week year round, take inspiration from a few chefs who regularly shop at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market as they share tips on upcycling would-be-wasted ingredients.

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market: Featured Vendors

Louis Iacopi and his son, Mike, operate Iacopi Farms in Half Moon Bay. On Saturday, visit their stand early for limited English peas and Fava beans.

From their transitional organic farm in Caruthers, the Sorensens bring fresh and preserved blueberries to the market late spring through early summer.

Mission Community Market: Featured Vendors

Delightful Foods is a family-run bakery. Choose from their 19 flavors of pie on Thursdays in the Mission and on Saturdays at the Ferry Plaza.

Missy Gotelli and her family grow cherries in Stockton and Acampo. Visit their stand on Thursday for some of the first of the season.
