The digital lifestyle shapes the China NEV market.

China’s consumers are among the world’s most digitally obsessed. NEVs are a basic building block for a digital lifestyle. |

While government policy may be paving the way, Chinese consumers are shaping how, and how quickly, automakers and suppliers are crafting their China strategy. “I am amazed at how technically savvy Chinese customers are and how they embrace technology. WeChat has everything,” Jennifer Goforth, chief electrification engineer at General Motors China, tells Wards Intelligence. “That digital lifestyle is part of every day. I can go up to a fruit stand and pay digitally. (Chinese consumers) expect a seamless experience.” |
Convenience is a key word in China’s NEV market. Living a digital lifestyle requires giving up a lot of information and therefore sacrificing privacy. “Privacy is a foreign concept,” David Xu Daquan, executive vice president at Bosch (China) Investment, tells Wards Intelligence. “(In China), people exchange data for convenience. This is one reason we think the automotive industry in China will be different compared to other countries, and will be leading,” especially in electrification, connectivity. |
