| Holocaust survivors recall horrors | | Tova Friedman was told by her mother never to look a Nazi in the eyes. Credit: Reuters | As around 50 survivors gathered to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust, world leaders watched on in silence. Tova Friedman, 86, is one of the youngest survivors. She heard the heart-breaking cries of parents, which fell on deaf ears. She thought to herself: "Am I the only Jewish child left in the world?" She recalled the horror of watching girls being taken to the gas chambers, "crying and shivering" as they walked barefoot in the snow. "They too became ashes," she says. |

And finally... in the UK | A random text sent in 1998 changed the course of Donovan Shears' life. Playing around with his first mobile phone, an 18th birthday present, he tapped in a random number and sent a text saying "hello". A woman named Kirsty wrote back: "Hi". Four years later they were married. "That single moment led to over 20 years of love, laughter and partnership," they said as they prepare to renew their vows. | |
