STORIES: THE WHITE GOLD OF PUGLIA |
FROM SEAWATER, FOLLOWING THE RHYTHM OF MAN AND NATURE, THE SALT IS BORN. |
The salt pan of MARGHERITA DI SAVOIA, whose origins date back to 200 BC, is located on the Adriatic Coast on the fringes of the Daunia, 5 km from the river Ofanto, 12 km from the city of Barletta to the south and 40 km from the Gargano to the north. It extends over a strip of land about 20 km long, stretching inland for maximum of 5 km and occupying a total area of about 4,500 hectares called the Wetland. It is the biggest and oldest Saltpan in Europe. Photographed in November 2023. Complete online exhibition : 31 images here |

THE WHITE GOLD OF PUGLIA. FROM SEAWATER, FOLLOWING THE RHYTHM OF MAN AND NATURE, THE SALT IS BORN. Dazzling sunlight reflects off the salt crystals in the salt fields of the Salina di Margherita di Savoia. The shattered steel constructions of the old machinery and cranes for the salt harvest stand out in stark - almost black - contrast against the heaps of white salt. And the concentration of dissolved salt is visible even in the seawater in the channels – the viscous undulating surface of the water has an almost metallic sheen. In graphically structured photographs, Christian and Helga von Alvensleben portray in perceptive portraits the cultivated landscape of the Salina, its flora and inhabitants, characterized by the traditional production of sea salt over a period of two millennia. Thus, this photographic series, created in Puglia in November 2023, constitutes a continuation of their non-commissioned photographic works depicting the elements, in an aesthetically impressive and self-contained thematic manner.
