To celebrate her special Christmas in Australia, singer-songwriter and presenter Christine Anu is taking over the What to Watch newsletter. Keep reading to hear about her experience making Christmas in Australia as well as Christine's recommendations for what to watch on ABC iview! 'Christmas in Australia is a unique experience since it happens in summer, it’s something we should be proud of, full of vibrantly different traditions all throughout our nation. The Compass Christmas special, Christmas in Australia unwraps the beauty that lies from one family Christmas to another and gives us a deeper understanding of the different cultures around Australia and the way Christmas can be celebrated differently to what we all know. It’s been a challenging past few years for everyone and last year Christmas for me like for many others felt robbed. I couldn’t go and spend Christmas with my mum which was difficult as we lost dad the year before and it is tradition to celebrate our first Christmas without our loved ones. While hosting this special I get to share the customs of Torres Strait Islanders during Christmas time while looking at the cross sections of different cultures during Christmas throughout our nation. Filming this special really made me feel like Christmas was back in full swing, I haven’t had a bigger lead up into Christmas since my children have become too old for Santa, visiting the Christmas shop was such a joyful experience, it awoke all the sleepy elves inside me while surrounded by lights and ornaments, I could see myself walking out with everything. All throughout filming the show there was moments I will forever cherish including catching up with my mum on zoom and singing Silent Night in langue with my daughter. Christmas in Australia is a beautiful journey around our nation of all the different moments of Christmas we love and traditions which we may not even be aware of yet.' - Christine Anu |
