| Church ‘pleased’ with potential effort to refresh downtown |
|
| | The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed support Thursday for efforts to revamp downtown Salt Lake City, which could include an NHL hockey arena. Utah lawmakers passed legislation that would allow Salt Lake City to create a downtown revitalization zone. A bill titled “Capital City Reinvestment Zone Amendments,” which described the zone as a “sports and entertainment project area,” passed the Senate this week and was sent to the House. On Thursday, the House passed a new version of HB272 that changed “sports and entertainment project area” to “revitalization zone” and “reinvestment” in the title to “revitalization.” “The aim of this bill is to revitalize downtown. As we all know, there are concerns with how our capital city looks and is presented to the world,” said Rep. Jon Hawkins, R-Pleasant Grove. | The life of a military spouse is not easy. Military families move every two to three years on average, according to the U.S. Department of Defense, with around 200,000 to 350,000 military members living with their families internationally. Uprooting your family so often comes with many challenges, but a Clearinghouse survey found that job insecurity was the biggest challenge for military spouses between 2016 and 2020. In 2016, 38% said military spouse employment was their biggest concern, and that number has risen each year to as many as 52% in 2020. As an engineer on Hill Air Force Base in Davis County, Aniza Brown saw firsthand the struggles military spouses face, which led her to pitch the Rosie Project.
