Good morning from Atlanta. LSU coach Brian Kelly, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, linebacker Whit Weeks and wide receiver Chris Hilton were here Monday for the first day of SEC Media Days, a four-day event being held at the College Football Hall of Fame. Monday was a busy sports news day on the LSU front with media days and a variety of other topics, so let's get to it. As John Fricke of "CNN Sports Tonight" used to say when giving scores scrolled on the screen (I'm staying in the Omni hotel in what used to be the CNN Center; the network recently moved back to midtown Atlanta) here's the news served on a hard roll: - Kelly made a series of changes to LSU's preseason preparations to try to help the Tigers better get focused on their Aug. 30 season opener at Clemson and snap LSU's five-game losing streak in season openers.
- LSU is focused on Clemson in the short term, but Kelly also has a long-term view with his recent bolstering of LSU's front-office personnel. Eventually it could pay off in a fifth modern era national championship for the Tigers.
- I've got three takes, otherwise known in the biz as my Three and Out, from Day 1 in Atlanta.
- New LSU receiver Nic Anderson has been involved in a car accident, but he's expected to make a quick recovery.
- ESPN analyst and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy said former LSU and Bama coach Nick Saban (who is not here this week) is itching to get back into coaching. SEC Network host Paul Finebaum shot down that theory, but Kelly was asked about the prospect anyway and had this to say. LSU fans had this to say, sounding kind of like Charlie Brown when Lucy pulls the football away: "Aaaaaaaugh!"
- The major league baseball draft wrapped up Monday. We've got a host of stories about LSU players and prospects who have been drafted over the past two days, but we'll let you start with our handy dandy MLB draft tracker and go from there. Of course, former LSU ace Paul Skenes makes his second straight start for the National League here Tuesday night in the MLB All-Star Game.
- Meanwhile, LSU baseball has picked up another player in the transfer portal, a right-handed pitcher from Angelo State. We've got all the details right here.
- LSU gymnastics great Ashleigh Gnat, who has been an assistant on LSU's staff for the past five years, is getting out of coaching. The search for her replacement is expected to be quick.
- And finally, LSU women's basketball has scheduled an appearance in a tournament this coming season in St. Thomas.
