IC Does Management for 14 Series-Connected Li-ion Battery Cells
Renesas Electronics has announced its fourth-generation lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery management IC that offers lifetime accuracy. The ISL78714 provides accurate cell voltage and temperature monitoring, along with cell balancing and extensive system diagnostics to protect 14-cell Li-ion battery packs while maximizing driving time and range for hybrid and electric vehicles. The ISL78714 monitors and balances up to 14 series connected cells with ±2 mV accuracy across automotive temperature ranges, letting system designers make informed decisions based on absolute voltage levels. The ISL78714 includes a precision 14-bit analog-to-digital converter and associated data acquisition circuitry. The device also offers up to six external temperature inputs (two available from GPIOs) and includes fault detection and diagnostics for all key internal functions.

Two Power Delivery Chips ProvideUSB Type-C Charging Solutions
Microchip Technology has announced two new solutions that simplify USB Type-C PD (Power Delivery) for a range of applications. The company claims it as one of the industry's first USB-IF-certified USB 3.1 SmartHub devices with integrated support for Power Delivery (TID1212). The USB705x family enables fast device charging and introduces unique PD implementations called HostFlexing and PDBalancing. The second device, the UPD301A, is a standalone USB Type-C PD controller that significantly simplifies the implementation of basic USB Type-C PD charging functionality, making it well suited for applications from rear seat charging in vehicles to portable equipment to public charging stations.

5 W AC-DC Converter Boasts Wide Input Voltage Range
Aimtec has announced a 5 W AC/DC converter, the AMEL5-277NZ, that has been designed to offer greater economies of scale due to greater production automation, leading to improved reliability and performance. Offering a wide industrial input voltage range of 85-305 VAC and an output voltage range from 3.3-24 V, this series offers many benefits for embedded system designs.
This new series offers wide operating temperatures, from -40°C to 70°C and isolation of 4,000 VAC for improved reliability and system safety. Furthermore, a high MTBF of 300,000 hours, output short circuit protection (OSCP), output over-current protection (OCP) and an output over-voltage protection (OVP) come standard with the series. The AMEL5-277NZ is well suited perfect for street lighting controls, grid power, instrumentation, industrial controls, telecom and industry 4.0.

Fuel Gauge ICs Provide 2-Level Li-ion Battery Protection
Maxim Integrated has announced fuel gauge ICs which that company claims offers the most configurable settings for battery safety in the industry and uniquely allow fine tuning of voltage and current thresholds based on various temperature zones. The newest 1-cell, pack-side ICs in this portfolio are the MAX17301 and the MAX17311. These ICs also offer a secondary protection scheme in case the primary protection fails. This secondary protection scheme permanently disables the battery by overriding a secondary protector or blowing a fuse in severe fault conditions.
All ICs in the family are equipped with Maxim's patented ModelGauge m5 EZ algorithm that delivers highest state-of-charge (SOC) accuracy that on average offers 40% better accuracy than competitive offerings and eliminates the need for battery characterization. These fuel gauges also offer the industry's lowest quiescent current (IQ)---up to 80% lower than the nearest competitor according to Maxim, and feature SHA-256 authentication to safeguard the systems from counterfeit batteries. Surface Mount Inductors Meet High-Density Power Needs
TT Electronics has announced two new surface mount device (SMD) power inductors: the HM66M series (shown) for use in high frequency power conversion systems and EMI filter applications, and the HM78M series for use in high density and high frequency DC/DC converter applications. The TT Electronics HM66M series power inductors are designed for the complex industrial and telecommunications markets. The HM66M is a shielded, miniature low-profile SMD inductor that integrates a ferrite material core for significant permeability and temperature advantages.
Characterized by low losses at high frequencies, these inductors are ideally suited for power supplies and frequency converters that operate with fast switching power semiconductors on a GaN basis. Power inductance is optimized within a frequency range from 700 kHz to 4 MHz, and designed for systems that require switching frequencies up to 4 MHz and operating temperatures at 125°C. The HM66M series is offered in three standard case sizes: 60, 70 and 84.
