Solderable SoMs are becoming quite a bit more popular as time passes. The iWave iW-Rainbow-G46M, is based on an NXP i.MX 8XLite, meant for automotive IoT, in other applications. It is aiming to open the door to Vehicle-to-vehicle communication, Vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-network solutions. A look at the automobile as an ecosystem that is moving through the industry at an increasing pace.

Embedded Boards Go Mainstream

Hello Circuit Cellar fans, it is now a fact that embedded systems have reached mainstream media. Just recently, a Ford Motor Company spokesman said, when asked by a major national television network reporter, "What is happening in automotive this year?" He replied simply "Embedded Systems." This can now be recognized as something we will all be hearing about when it comes to cars, often.

Although there had already been a place at Ford devoted to embedded electronics, it wasn't dedicated, which with the advent of the Ford Model e the company EV arm, it now is. There is a CEO, a marketing Vice President, and somewhat of star quality to both. The Vice President had been CEO of another division at Ford. The new embedded systems CEO had worked on Apple's Titan project, a sophisticated car of the future, totally autonomous. And "totally" is the operative word here. The entire push in embedded boards of late has been in one very important area, the automobile as a software-defined ecosystem. The car, or truck, is the platform, that exists at once of itself, in-itself, and on the network. The embedded boards of the near future will handle much of what is coming.

The embedded systems will make it possible for vehicles to have a complete and autonomous software system designed to communicate, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, vehicle-to-network, encapsulating the car in a complete ecosystem that will make the car a unique "personality." This week's newsletter focuses on three such simple, yet very powerful boards, a SoM, an update to an embedded computer family, and a board developed for the home amateur and the industrial automotive engineer. This is going to be an exciting year for embedded boards. I will keep everyone up-to-date on the latest developments.
