More than a dozen students at a high school in a Nashville suburb were injured along with their teacher when a science experiment turned into a chemical fire, sending nine people to the hospital. Read articles featured in The Washington Post and on WKRN-TV in Nashville, which includes information on the NSTA safety alert issued last year recommending teachers not use methanol-based flame tests on an open laboratory desk. Check out the Education News Roundup for a selection of the week's other top education news stories.
Register today for the second webinar hosted by Arizona State University's School of Sustainability on "Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience Leadership Series." The May 16 webinar will focus on innovative climate solutions. Learn more and register here.
Have you ever had a good idea for a game where kids can learn science? Lab Out Loud's guest this week has, and he made those ideas a reality! Nathan Schreiber joins co-hosts Brian Bartel and Dale Basler this week to talk about his Science Ninjas games that teach real science with engaging graphics, fun characters, and easy-to-follow instructions. Science teachers on average spend approximately $450 each year on lab materials according to a new analysis by researchers from North Carolina State University. The study—which involved nearly 700 middle and high school science teachers nationwide—found that 70% of teachers reported not having adequate funding to provide high-quality science instruction for their students. Read the article featured in The Conversation.
When students use tools (perhaps some unfamiliar ones), supplies, and equipment during labs, careful planning is needed to avoid potential problems. How do you ensure lab equipment and supplies stay in the lab and are used safely? NSTA Reports wants to hear about your strategies and challenges in maintaining a safe lab.
For the first time in history, the five leading STEM organizations — NSTA, NCTM, ISTE, ITEEA, and ASEE—will convene with a select group of participants in leadership roles in STEM education. Learn more about the Building a STEM Leadership Alliance 2018 Summit.
