Browns move: Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb has sent a letter to the Browns telling them the city intends to enforce the Modell Law, which gives the city or local residents the opportunity to purchase the team before it can leave to play in another location, Peter Krouse reports. Bibb’s letter comes a little more than two months after the Browns filed a challenge to the Modell Law in federal court in Cleveland, hoping to have it ruled unconstitutional. Gang troubles: Cuyahoga County prosecutors are seeking to hold the “Harvard Mobb,” a Cleveland street gang, responsible for violent crimes across the city and its suburbs. Authorities have spent the last year prosecuting the cases of 14 men accused of being part of the gang, Sean McDonnell reports. Unemployment fraud: A state subcontractor who was able to access Ohio’s unemployment insurance system for months after his job ended was among those indicted this month for what investigators called a $6.9 million unemployment fraud scheme. Andrew Kerobo only worked on unemployment claims from June 22,2020, until Sept. 5, 2020. Yet he was able to continue accessing the system and releasing funds until Dec. 10, 2020, Laura Hancock reports. |

'Deadname' issues: Nearly a year after a transgender Ohioan was kicked off the ballot for not putting her “deadname” on her campaign form, Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s office has altered candidate paperwork to prevent such issues from happening in the future. Jeremy Pelzer reports the rule hasn’t just been a problem for transgender candidates. Bernie Moreno: When U.S. Sen.-elect Bernie Moreno is sworn in as a member of Congress on Friday, the Westlake Republican will serve on four congressional committees with broad responsibilities, one of which was chaired by the Democrat he defeated to win election, Sabrina Eaton reports. |

Housing survey: The Fair Housing Center for Rights and Research wants to hear from Cuyahoga County residents with prior criminal convictions about how they’re finding housing. Kaitlin Durbin reports the nonprofit is conducting a 12-question survey through Jan. 20 to “gather the opinions and experiences of people with prior criminal convictions living in Cuyahoga County.” Winter storm: It might be a white New Year’s Day for parts of Northeast Ohio. Julie Washington reports the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Wednesday through Sunday, with accumulations of at least 6 inches predicted in some areas. The heaviest snowfall could hit Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, and Geauga and Lake counties. |

Healthy resolutions: Cutting out sugary drinks, indulging in alcohol in moderation and getting up to date with health screenings are among the best healthy New Year’s resolutions, according to the American Medical Association. Julie Washington has a list of 10 health recommendations from the AMA. |

Police lawsuit: A Bay Village surgeon said in a lawsuit that he can no longer perform surgery after a police officer slammed him to the ground after the doctor called 911 for emergency help for his son. Adam Ferrise reports the lawsuit says Jerold Gurley, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Southwest General, suffered injuries to his shoulder after the Dec. 18, 2023, encounter with Bay Village police officer Carlos Velez. Murder charges: A Summit County grand jury has charged two men with murder involving a home invasion in Akron last month. DaVionne Bigby, 26 of Akron, and Gerald Wilson, 25, of Columbus, also were charged with felonious assault, aggravated burglary and multiple firearm specifications, Lucas Daprile reports. |
