June 23, 2025

Good morning. Let’s start with a splash — more specifically, the hot-pink paint that climate protesters poured on the protective glass of a Picasso at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on Friday. Staff Writer Maya Pontone has the story.

Meanwhile, a blogger who calls himself “Dark Lord of the Tech Right” has put together a proposal for the next US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale that is as unhinged as you might fear; Sarah Rose Sharp skewers it below. But in good news from a world on fire, the Ringling Museum of Art will not be transferred to the New College of Florida, much to the chagrin of Governor Ron DeSantis.

More on that in this edition, plus reviews of Caravaggio and the late Algerian-German photographer Hamid Zénati. And it wouldn’t be a proper start to the week without the latest subject in our monthlong series on New York City’s LGBTQ+ art history: the legendary west-side piers and the gay art community that bloomed there. Enjoy, and have a lovely Monday.
