Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Kyung Lah

On Tuesday, CNN correspondent Kyung Lah chased down Arizona Senate President Karen Fann (R) for an impromptu parking lot interview after requesting an interview more than a dozen times. The result was ... fascinating.

Fann has been among the most ardent proponents of the election “audit” currently being conducted in Maricopa County. At one point during this ongoing, weeks-long process, “auditors” were looking for evidence of bamboo fibers because, so went a conspiracy theory, some of the ballots had been flown in from Asia. In other instance, former state Rep. Anthony Kern (R), who was present at the Capitol riot on January 6, was identified as one of ballot counters.

Lah’s questioning revealed an interesting insight into Fann’s reasoning behind supporting what the Republican-dominated Maricopa County Board of Supervisors called a “spectacle that is harming all of us” in a letter to Fann.

The interview went big across media, generating trending topics and articles. Suffice it to say the words "doozy", "bizarre", and "bonkers" came up a number of times. CNN's own Brianna Keilar was particularly inspired by Lah's reporting.

It's just plain great work from a great reporter.

MEDIA LOSER:
CNN

Despite some terrific content like today's Media Winner interview, by most measures CNN has had some rough ratings results recently. In fact, not a single CNN show cracked the million viewer mark on Monday.

The network, which saw historic post-election levels of viewership, notched just one dayparts victory over MSNBC in the valuable demographic of viewers age 25-54, according to Nielsen data.

CNN’s highest-rated show on Monday was embattled host Chris Cuomo’s Cuomo Prime Time, which had 919,000 total viewers. MSNBC’s most-watched program, The Rachel Maddow Show, notched 2.43 million, and Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight had 2.79 million. In the key demo. Cuomo averaged 191k viewers age 25-54, with Maddow at 349k and Carlson at 440k.

Fox News was first in total day, with 1.45 million total viewers, 227k in the demo. MSNBC was second in total viewers with 1.09 million, and third in the demo at 137k. CNN was third, with 636k, and second in the demo, with 144k.

In prime time, Fox averaged 2.44 million total viewers (nearly triple CNN’s total), and 383k in the demo. MSNBC was second, with 1.88 million total (more than double CNN’s), and 242k in the demo.

Trump Tried to End 2008 Investigation Into New England Patriots by Bribing Former Senator With ‘A Lot Of Money’

According to a new and detailed reportDonald Trump attempted to intervene with a U.S. Senate investigation long before he became president.

In 2008, U.S. Senator Arlen Specter directed his “passion for the truth” at the New England Patriots, with the goal of determining how many NFL games their “Spygate” scandal helped them win. That’s right, the intersection of sports and politics is not a new trend.

Months earlier, New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini, a former assistant with Bill Belichick and the Patriots, turned the New England football team in for illegally videotaping the oppositions signals. After the NFL slapped the Patriots with a couple of fines and stripped them of a first round draft pick, the league destroyed all video evidence and swept their four-day investigation under the rug.

Specter wasn’t satisfied with the league’s brief investigation, and decided to launch a Spygate probe of his own. According to ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham, it wasn’t long before Spector received an interesting offer to leave the Patriots alone.

The whole sad story is sordid but fascinating.

‘Damn, You’re Still Alive?!!’

After a brief hiatus, Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto returned to Your World on Tuesday and kicked off the show by gleefully reading some of the more, er, colorful messages he had received upon coming back. Charles Payne and Sandra Smith filled in for Cavuto while he was away.

“Ok I’m back!” Cavuto led off. “Now, I thought that would be good news because I missed you guys while I was away, but apparently it wasn’t always that mutual. Welcome everybody. I’m Neil Cavuto and this is Your World, and a lot of you preferred having Your World with someone else doing the show, apparently.”

He then proceeded to read some of the “fan” mail. It was ... something.
