Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
CNN's Whitney Wild

Certain Senate Republicans may not think it is necessary to have a commission to investigate the events of January 6, but it is still a very real trauma for many of the law enforcement officers who were at the Capitol that day.

CNN law enforcement correspondent Whitney Wild sat down with two Capitol Police officers for new interviews detailing the harrowing events of that day.

Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who emigrated from the Dominican Republic when he was 12 and later served in Iraq as a member of the Army Reserve, joined the Capitol Police in 2008. He told Wild that he feared for his life that day, and shared his shock and hurt that he, a military veteran, was being physically attacked by people calling him "traitor."

Officer Byron Evans also thought he might die on Jan. 6, and said it made him angry to see the rioters acting so disrespectfully in a building he had protected every day.

In an emotional segment, Gonell shared how he couldn't let his wife hug him when he got home after the riot, because he was covered in pepper spray and blood.

These are stories that need to be told, and Wild handled these important interviews with grace and empathy.

MEDIA LOSER:
Rudy Giuliani

Remember when Rudy Giuliani was "America's Mayor"? Remember the guy who tackled crime rates in Times Square and who was praised for his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks? Remember the tough-talking federal prosecutor who scored thousands of convictions of drug dealers and mafiosos?

We still vaguely remember that guy, but we have no idea where the heck he went.

After a bizarre turn as the personal attorney for former President Donald Trump sent Giuliani traipsing around the country pushing a plethora of ludicrous legal arguments, these days he's mostly seen on his own podcast and a few other right-wing media platforms.

This week saw a surge of interest in Giuliani's podcast, but mainly by Twitter users to mock it mercilessly. The episode, titled "UFOS, Are They Real?", included a segment with Giuliani hawking several products, including Mike Lindell's infamous MyPillows, waffle blankets, and an especially enthusiastic endorsement for "SLIPPERS!"

"The human centipede of grift" wasn't even the harshest tweet reacting to the now-viral video clip.

Check out the embarrassing train wreck here.

The A-Block

Florida Man battles all the haters and losers

Former President Donald Trump may be out of the White House and all major social media platforms, but  he's showing no signs of having a peaceful retirement like president-turned-portraitist George W. Bush.

Facebook announced on Friday that Trump's excommunication will continue for at least two years. Unsurprisingly, Trump was unhappy about that and sent out one of his angry little emails about it

There was another Trumpian email raging at Pennsylvania state legislators, trying to bully them into engaging in a similar audit charade as the one taking place in Arizona.

Trump isn't totally without friends. Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush launched his campaign to be his state's next attorney general with a direct appeal to Trump and his supporters

And his former VP Mike Pence said he and Trump may never "see eye to eye" regarding Jan. 6, but that was as harsh as it got. Mediaite's Tommy Christopher shredded Pence's milquetoast defense of his own right to life in a column that included references to Julius Caesar and Han Solo.

Just hanging out

Saturday Night Live's Michael Che had his first appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday to promote his new sketch show, That Damn Michael Che, and the segment took an unexpected turn when it was crashed by a very recognizable face.

“Yeah, I went to Ohio, staying at my friend’s house, we’re just hanging out,” Che said.

That friend was none other than Dave Chapelle, who eventually popped up on camera and joined the interview.
