Get up! Stand up! Show up! NAIDOC Week 2022
The City is hosting several events during NAIDOC Week (Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July) to amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and celebrate those who have driven positive change for their communities. About 90 people got up, stood up and showed up for the City's National NAIDOC Week community breakfast and flag-raising ceremony yesterday. They joined us for a sit-down brekky, catch-ups and yarning. It was followed by a Welcome to Country by Rev. Mitchell Garlett and the performance of four dances by the amazing Doorum Dancers - a family group of talented Nyungars from toddlers to adults - accompanied by Ryan Humphries on the Didgeridoo and tapping sticks. Guests then heard from Miss and Mr NAIDOC Perth Runners Up 2022, Minang Yok Kalisha Krakouer from the Wagyl Kaip (Great Southern) region and Nyungar Marmun Thomas Betts from Boorloo (Perth), who shared their journeys as Aboriginal people growing up and living in WA. The City's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were then raised, accompanied by Tim Kelly on Didgeridoo. During the week we're holding a Community Fun Day in Coolbellup, and NAIDOC storytelling and creative workshops at Cockburn Libraries. Whatever you are doing for #NAIDOC2022, we hope you connect to the theme Get up! Stand up! Show up! and celebrate First Nations history and culture. City of Cockburn graphic designers produced a special NAIDOC Week header and footer for Soundings and social media profile images, based on the original artwork of local Wandandi Noongar and Ait Koleda artist and designer Tyrown Waigana.

Carol, Head of Planning at the City answers some common questions we get about the Jandakot Road upgrades.
$12.4m Jandakot Road upgrade stage 2 is complete
The City is upgrading Jandakot Road to accommodate the growing number of vehicles using what was previously a rural road. Stage 2 has just been completed and included widening Jandakot Road to two lanes in either direction from Solomon Road through to Berrigan Drive, plus new roundabouts, intersection upgrades, and a shared path. Planning is in the early stages for the third and final stage from Fraser Road to Warton Road and is directly related to the rate of development of the adjoining land to the south. Answers to some common questions Carol, Head of Planning at the City, answers common questions like why we didn’t upgrade the whole road in one go, why work takes so long, and how we prioritise road upgrades. Funding The $12.4m stage two project was made possible with $6.3m from the State Government’s Metropolitan Regional Road Group, $3.7m from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program, $1.2m from Schaffer Corporation and $1.2m from Stockland. The LRCI Program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Black Spot funding to improve Spearwood intersection
A busy roundabout in Spearwood will receive important safety upgrades to reduce traffic crashes at the site.
The City has received more than $500k from the Australian Government’s 2021-22 Black Spot Program to improve the roundabout at the intersection of Spearwood Avenue and Hamilton Road.
Works are planned to begin in quarter three of 2022 and completed by the end of the year.
Not everyone wants to play
We know your dog comes first; we get it, you adore them, and they are very much part of your family. To ensure your dog is happy and safe when out and about in Cockburn, please keep them under control at all times, whether they are on-leash or off-leash, as not everyone wants to play with your dog.
Greening our natural spaces
We’re working to reduce our environmental impact and preserve our precious natural spaces here in Cockburn. One of the ways we do this is by revegetating degraded areas within the City. Every year we plant up to 80,000 seedlings in June and July, using species that are native to our coastal, wetland and woodland ecosystems. Our residents help us throughout the year via community and school planting days, as well as national tree planting day. It's a team effort but one that is proving highly successful in terms of bringing our degraded spaces back to life.
Do you know a volunteer who deserves to be recognised for their contribution to our community? Nominate them today for the 2022 Cockburn Volunteer Awards and they could win a share of $3,600! Nomination forms are online and entries close on Sunday 31 July.
Rocco Zagari has taught hundreds of local seniors how to dance their cares away in the past decade, passing on his love for the healthy fun activity with patience, passion and pizzazz. The volunteer Ballroom, Modern Latin and New Vogue dance instructor has been named the 2022 recipient of the City of Cockburn WA Day Award at the City’s 50th annual Pioneers Luncheon.
Families are facing long waits for child care, with many centres filled to capacity for the foreseeable future. Why not help your community and start a life-changing career as a family day care educator? Serene (pictured above) has run her own family day care service from her home since 2013. One day, after unpacking her son’s day care bag and flipping through the notes from his family day care educator, Serene reflected on how much she loved the service he attended and how terrific the educator was, which inspired her to walk the same path.
‘I absolutely love the autonomy and independence of running my own business. I cherish the privilege of early childhood teaching and looking after the many children who have been entrusted into my care over the years.’
If you’re looking for a rewarding career change, consider becoming an educator. You can discuss any concerns you might have about potential obstacles or difficulties in setting up a family day care with the Cockburn Family Day Care team. Visitwww.cockburn.wa.gov.au/FDC or call 08 9411 3303.

The cost would be referred back to the Council for consideration. The proposal to upgrade the facilities at Malabar Park to an 'international' standard included concept designs for a new track, clubroom building, start ramp, gym area, offices and lighting.
The City received $100,000 from the State Government to create a family-friendly space at Minori Park in Yangebup. Residents were actively involved in shaping the design of the park, with the final upgrades including:
