Cocktail bars, a beer festival and big name theatreBridgerton and Black Panther stars take to the stage
Londonist partner content: bringing you the best events, offers and more around the city. Ticket alert! Lock in London Oktoberfest nowSummer might have sun-soaked pub gardens and tinnies in the park, but the absolute best month in a London beer lover’s calendar is undoubtedly October. That’s when the capital lets loose Bavarian style, with lederhosen-clad revellers sipping from froth-topped (and fantastically large) steins as they bop to the beats of an oompah band. We’re talking, of course, about London Oktoberfest. This authentically-German celebration — which has been taking the city by storm since 2011 — happens on select days across three weeks this October. It first pops up in Finsbury Park, 9-11 October, before moving to St. Paul’s Green in Hammersmith, 16-18 October and 23-25 October. And tickets are on sale now! Book now and prepare to be transported to Bavaria come October, where brezel, bratwurst and beer galore await inside a giant tent festooned with the colours of the state flag. There’s live music, long tables (ideal if you’re in a large group) and wait-staff clad in traditional dress. Oh, and if you fancy dressing up yourself, you can even purchase dirndl and lederhosen from the event’s online shop. Time to start practising your Schuhplattler… London’s best cocktail barsIn a city not short on great cocktail bars, there are a select few that have made it into our list of regular haunts. And what an eclectic list it is: we’re talking speakeasies, dive bars, agaverias and even sake breweries. All of them have one thing in common, though — the magical alchemy of drinks, atmosphere… and a frisson of who-knows-where-the-night-might-take-us energy. Bridgerton and Black Panther stars on stageLetitia Wright (who starred in Marvel mega-hit Black Panther) and Golda Rosheuvel (of Regencyish romance Bridgerton fame) come to Bush Theatre this September. They play a mother and daughter reeling from the death of the family matriarch in Superwoman Schema, a new play by Emma Dennis-Edwards. As part of an ongoing series of artist interviews — exclusively for paying subscribers to our community for art lovers — we recently chatted to Daniel Preece, who has spent over two decades painting London. His work encourages viewers to reassess their daily surroundings, and see the city in a different way. Tube design triumphsFrom red-tiled tube stations to that iconic roundel, the London Underground is more than just a world-leading public transportation system — it’s a triumph of great design. Mark Ovenden’s London Underground By Design is a beautifully-illustrated book that charts the evolution of its architecture and branding, and you can get it via our Bookshop.org storefront. Open-air swimmingNot sure if you’ve noticed but London’s been pretty darn sweltering recently. Slap on the factor 50 and get some relief from the heat with the help of the capital’s finest outdoor pools and lidos. Refreshing dips can be found all over the capital and, in case the weather takes a dramatic turn, some are even heated. |
