How the grocery delivery service rebounded after Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods.
Hi, On this day in 2017, Instacart’s future looked shaky. Amazon had just announced its acquisition of Whole Foods — which was Instacart’s biggest partner. But in the past year, Instacart has diversified its business, signing new deals with Kroger and Albertsons, and expanding the company’s pacts with Costco and CVS. The startup also raised $350 million in additional financing that valued it at $4 billion. In short, CEO Apoorva Mehta has successfully positioned the delivery company as the last line of defense for big grocers to compete with the new Amazon-Whole Foods behemoth. We’ll ask Mehta how Instacart plans to continue to stand out in the crowded grocery delivery space while making sure that the business is sustainable over the long term. Mehta will join Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke and other industry leaders onstage at Code Commerce in New York City on September 17 and 18.
