Amazon recently announced the opening of a new Whole Foods in Brooklyn. The catch: It won’t be available for in-store shoppers but will exclusively service online delivery.

This first-of-its-kind experiment for Whole Foods is one of Amazon’s many strategic maneuvers to accommodate the surge in demand for grocery delivery due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Delivery sales for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods quadrupled year over year the week of March 16 as the reality of coronavirus stay-at-home restrictions set in.

Is the online-exclusive Whole Foods location a model for the future of grocery, or is it a measure to accommodate temporary changes in demand during the pandemic?
