Voornaam, We are thrilled to announce that the Keynote Speaker for our Democrats Build Back Together Gala is Congresswoman Nikema Williams! The virtual Gala is this Saturday, November 6th, at 5pm. Get your tickets at dpo.org/BuildBackTogether! Congresswoman Nikema Williams has been a fierce advocate for social justice, women and families throughout her political and professional career. She was elected to represent Georgia's 5th Congressional District in 2020, to the seat long held by her mentor and the late civil rights leader, John Lewis. As a Member of Congress, Congresswoman Williams continues to uplift his legacy by fighting to prevent voter suppression and expand free and fair access to the ballot box. In addition to her work on voting rights, Congresswoman Williams has a passion for many legislative issues including reproductive justice, social justice, economic justice and health care â her work addresses delivering on the promise of America for all. She currently sits on the Financial Services Committee, where she is Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Investigations & Oversight, and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The first Black woman Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, she played a critical role in turning Georgia blue in 2020, and in helping to secure the current Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate during the Georgia Senate runoff elections. Prior to her election to Congress, she served in the Georgia State Senate, where she got in the âGood Troubleâ Congressman Lewis spoke about. In the wake of the disastrous 2018 Georgia elections, marked with rampant voter suppression, she was arrested at the Georgia State Capitol while peacefully protesting with her constituents, demanding that every vote be counted. Congresswoman Williams was born in Columbus, Georgia, and raised by her grandparents across the Chattahoochee River in Smiths Station, Alabama. She attended Talladega College â a liberal arts Historically Black College in Talladega, Alabama. She and her husband reside in Atlanta with their son. We cannot wait for Congresswoman Nikema Williams to join us on Saturday evening as our Keynote Speaker at the virtual Democrats Build Back Together Gala.
