Look what’s new at Children’s Memorial

Children’s Memorial recognized nationally for patient safety
Children’s Memorial Hospital is one out of only 10 children’s hospitals nationwide to be named “Top Hospital” for patient safety by the Leapfrog Group, a national consortium of healthcare payers that promotes “leaps” in patient safety. The hospital was cited for its use of CPOE to prevent medication errors, appropriate intensive care physician staffing, safe practices and preventing hospital-acquired infections. The “Top Hospital” designation is considered one of the highest honors for patient safety in the country. Read more »
Children’s Memorial physician co-authors new pediatric guidelines for cardiovascular health
Irwin Benuck, MD, Division Head for the Division of Community Based Medicine, was a member of an expert panel of physicians to develop guidelines for pediatric care providers based on a formal evidence review of the science addressing all the major cardiovascular risk factors. A summary report of the panel’s work, which began in 2006, was published in the December, 2011 issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.
Children’s Memorial expands its fertility preservation program and performs first ovarian harvest
Children's Memorial is expanding its fertility preservation services to its young cancer patients and their families. In February, Marleta Reynolds, MD, Chief of Surgery, and Julian Schink, MD, from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, performed the hospital’s first ovarian harvest on a female patient who was about to undergo aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. “I am confident that this groundbreaking surgery and techniques now in research stages will one day make it possible for young women who risk infertility from cancer treatments to have children of their own,” said Reynolds. 100th da Vinci® procedure performed at Children’s Memorial
Bruce Lindgren, MD, successfully completed the 100th robot-assisted laparoscopic procedure performed at Children's Memorial Hospital. The procedure was a laparoscopic ureteral reimplant with tapering, a 3.5 hour procedure. Although the robot is not the only option for this procedure, the success rate and decreased recovery time is optimal. Dr. Lindgren performed the 1st pediatric urological robot-assisted procedure in the greater Chicago area, the first robot-assisted surgery here, and is one of four surgeons trained in robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures at Children’s Memorial.
