Plastic banned: Single-use plastic items are now banned in NSW, with environmental activists welcoming the move as a win for marine life. The ban includes plastic straws, plates, plastic-stemmed cotton buds, cups and personal care products with microbeads. The John survey: The union representing surgeons and anaesthetists at Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital is concerned by what it calls "unusual" results from an anonymous survey. The survey was conducted by an independent third party, with more than 90 per cent of the 169 respondents saying they had no confidence in Hunter New England Health's leadership, including chief executive Michael DiRienzo. Port Stephens rates: A one-off 26 per cent rate rise for Port Stephens residents will be recommended as the best option for the local council's special rate variation. Councillors will vote on applying for a special rate variation at a meeting next week. Gun arrests: Police have seized equipment used to manufacture firearms from a home in Warners Bay as part of a national crackdown. Detectives, along with Border Force officers, searched the home where they also found printed firearm parts, 3D printers, ammunition, steroids and precursor chemicals. GP access funding: Federal Health Minister Mark Butler visited John Hunter Hospital and confirmed the after-hours clinics will be back to running at their former capacity in the next few months. The Calvary Mater clinic was forced to close last year and services were reduced at Belmont, Toronto, Maitland and the John Hunter after funding cuts. School upgrades: One of the Hunter Valley's most crowded and rundown schools is set for a major upgrade. A Department of Education school Infrastructure report shows Gillieston Public School will have between $25 and $75 million spent on it, with work to begin in the second half of next year. Jets go down: Newcastle Jets men's coach Arthur Papas says last weekend's game against Western Sydney was a good test for his side. The Jets recorded their first loss of the season, going down 2-0 to the Wanderers. Western Sydney is on top of the A-League ladder, while the Jets remain in third place. | Visit our website for more local news |

Thanks to ABC triple j presenter (and Merriwa boy) Dave Marchese for sending us this photo from Wingen taken during his travels through the Upper Hunter! It'll be a bit 50/50 for the remainder of the week. Of course, as we know, rain has hammered the Upper Hunter causing some flooding, and there looks to be a little bit of rain here and there for the rest of the week. The hottest it'll get will be about 24 or so in Newcastle at the weekend, with winds continuing to be strong and steady. | Check the seven-day forecast for your town |
