With so many scary diseases and germs making the rounds, it’s no wonder so many people are looking for health solutions to keep themselves safe. Factor in the high price of medicine and doctor visits, and you have a perfect storm for snake oil salesmen to hawk their wares. A perfect example going viral on Instagram recently is “colloidal silver,” which supposedly has antibiotic and antiviral properties.

Advocates claim consuming liquified silver will kill “toxins,” and some are going as far as saying it can destroy the COVID-19 coronavirus in only 12 hours. But in reality, there’s no evidence silver supplements do anything for your health. In fact, consuming too much has one irreversible side effect: It turns your skin blue. It’s a condition called argyria, and it’s caused by the metal depositing itself in your skin. I’d feel blue, too, if I got swindled into paying fo r this stuff.

Let’s leave the science to real scientists — like these guys who discovered a new shade of blue.
