Editor's note: The LSU email you received from us late last night was in error -- we accidentally sent you an old version by mistake. Today's fresh email is below. We apologize for the confusion. Good morning, everyone. While there's rarely a boring day in our business, Monday was one of those days that gets a sportswriters' juices flowing. We had breaking news on the men's basketball beat, some baseball doings, and, of course, the women's basketball team's attempt to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. So, let's get right to it. The day started with news that Murray State basketball coach Matt McMahon was accepting an offer to succeed Will Wade as the Tigers' coach after apparently becoming the front-runner for the job Sunday night. A few short hours later, McMahon and wife, Mary, and their three children were on a private plane headed for Baton Rouge after spending 11 years in Murray, Kentucky — seven as the Racers' head coach. A whirlwind day in which McMahon informed his team he was leaving for the LSU job included an appearance at the LSU women's NCAA tournament second-round game against Ohio State in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center (sadly, we'll have more on that later) where he was welcomed by Tiger fans. In case you're wondering who McMahon is, we have a quick-read on Woodward's latest high-profile hire in Five Things to Know about the new Tigers' basketball boss. That was a lot, but we have even more basketball. As for the LSU women … Woodward's wildly-popular and successful hire from last spring, Hall of Famer Kim Mulkey, had her team just one step away from the Sweet 16 on Monday night. But after pulling off a dramatic comeback in its first-round game on Saturday, LSU just didn't have it and the Tigers' magical season came to an end with a 79-64 loss to Ohio State. Columnist Scott Rabalais looks into how LSU's "beautiful season" suffered a brutal ending with a cruel setback. But, as he writes (spoiler alert) in his ending, a 26-win season is certainly just the beginning for Mulkey and her band of Tigers. Mulkey, who earlier in the day was named a finalist for the women's Naismith National Coach of the Year award, did her part to get the crowd involved, buying $20 tickets to help fill the student section. And then, there's baseball … We didn't forget, but there was a little news from the diamond. The Tigers' Tuesday night game with Louisiana Tech was moved to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday because of severe weather expected Tuesday in the Baton Rouge area and we have the latest on Jay Johnson's team in the new polls. FINALLY: HERE’S A GREAT DEAL Baseball, basketball, gymnastics, track, softball, beach volleyball, football … folks, springtime is busy time at LSU. No one covers the Tigers like we do. We will keep you up to date on the latest news on campus (and elsewhere). Our sportswriters are insightful, hard-working and generally nice people (most of the time). Support their work, and stay on top of everything. If you’re not a subscriber, come join us. Thank you for reading.
