Los Angeles and New York each lost hundreds of thousands of residents, most of whom moved elsewhere, during the first full year of the COVID-19 pandemic, based on Census Bureau population estimates. First-time unemployment claims at lowest point since 1969 Initial US unemployment claims fell to a seasonally adjusted 187,000 last week, a decline of 28,000 from the prior period, according to the Labor Department. The inventor of the GIF (with a soft "G") died

Stephen Wilhite created the GIF, short for graphics interchange format, in the 1980s as a way to share higher-quality, colorized versions of computer graphics. Wilhite, who died last week at 74, steadfastly insisted that the acronym is pronounced with a soft "G," as in "JIF," even though many pronounce it with a hard "G." One thing is for sure: Wilhite's creation, as well as the debate over how to pronounce it, will most certainly live on. Full Story: Salon (3/23)
