FALL OF AN EMPIRE: Last Sunday, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office got a call about a “plethora of medical records on different people” found dumped in a pile behind an abandoned Walgreens in Harvey. They were filled with details about the ailments of elderly and infirm former residents of the Maison DeVille nursing home, formerly owned by industry magnate Bob Dean, whose nursing home empire now seems to be crumbling even as he fights to win back his licenses to operate them. A MATTER OF TRUST: As a fight intensifies between the New Orleans City Council and Mayor LaToya Cantrell over the fate of tens of thousands of acres of south Louisiana land held in a city-controlled trust, a central dispute is emerging over just how much it is all worth. The Cantrell administration puts the value at $17 million, but that figure, taken from a nine-year-old appraisal, left out the most valuable piece of the disputed properties: the profitable land that is now part of the major oil and gas hub of Port Fourchon.
