The California Department of Education said it's removing two religious chants to Aztec gods from its ethnic studies curriculum in response to a lawsuit filed by parents. The curriculum in question included a section of "Affirmation, Chants, and Energizers" that addressed the deities by name and title, recognized them as sources of power and knowledge, invoked their assistance, and gave thanks to them. In a statement shared with The Christian Post, Paul Jonna, partner at LiMandri & Jonna LLP and Thomas More Society Special Counsel, explained that the curriculum "instructed students to chant the prayers for emotional nourishment after a ‘lesson that may be emotionally taxing or even when student engagement may appear to be low.’ The idea was to use them as prayers.”
A Christian politician in Finland whose trial is scheduled to begin next week for sharing her deeply held biblical beliefs on sexuality and marriage says it’s “quite a privilege” to be interrogated for her religious beliefs. Parliament Member Päivi Räsänen, who was interrogated by police for over 13 hours and questioned on how she interprets the Apostle Paul’s letters in the Bible, is facing six years in prison for voicing her opinion on marriage in a 2004 booklet on sexual ethics describing marriage as between one man and one woman. Räsänen, who worked as a doctor before going into politics and is married to a pastor, said it was absurd and shocking to be interrogated and claims it feels like “Soviet times," but stated the interrogation also provided the opportunity to share the Gospel with the police.
Miles McPherson, author and senior pastor of the Rock Church in San Diego, writes about how Martin Luther King Jr.'s words influenced him as a young boy and highlights several King-inspired questions people should continue to ask themselves today. "This isn’t just about getting a day off from school or work. It isn’t even about posting our favorite MLK quote to inspire others. The best way we can honor MLK’s life and legacy is to put into practice the principles that he ultimately gave his life for," McPherson says.
