| The Bead&Button Show: Your Creative Escape | Most of us feel more creative when we're happy and relaxed. The ideas just seem to flow out of us when life isn't causing more stress than usual. But did you know the reverse is true, too — that creativity can actually relieve excess stress? Whether you're an experienced artist or just a dabbler, a few minutes of quiet creativity during a period of heightened anxiety can break the cycle of worrying thoughts. Your mind enters a state of flow in which stressors — news headlines, upcoming tax deadlines, the car in need of repairs — fall away and your mind becomes focused on the project at hand. Art therapists have known this for decades. The mainstream has started to come around, too; just check out the grown-up coloring book display in any craft store! Jewelry makers know this instinctively. No matter what's going on in the outside world, there's nothing more relaxing and satisfying than stitching a vial of seed beads, linking a pile of jump rings, or hammering a sheet of copper. For a real creative escape, register for classes, book your hotel, and come to Milwaukee in June. After a few days of intense creativity with your fellow jewelry makers at the Bead&Button Show, you're sure to return home happy, relaxed, and with a beautiful new creation that's all your own. |

| Instructor Spotlight: Lucas Clarke | We asked 2017 Instructor Lucas Clarke a few questions about his work. Here are his answers: How do you keep your work space organized? Ha ha! I don't! What is your most essential tool, and why? Without hesitation I have to say fire. I can make do without almost any tool I use. But the one time I tried blowing glass without fire, I ended up taking out a light and having to pull shrapnel out of my hands. What are you most excited about in lampworking right now? The growing popularity of glass. The more people we have working it the more ideas come out. I've been seeing some astounding work coming up from all over the glass working community. Where do you find your inspiration when creating your art? • I get most of my inspiration from my work as a scientific glass blower. The unique shapes and odd seals intrigue me. The beauty of blending form and function. Working only in clear I'm unable to hide behind color, so my design and my execution are clearly visible. The constant flow of ever-changing, challenging work, pushing my abilities everyday. • When you're asked every day to make what somebody else wants. When it comes to what I want, it's relatively easy. It helps me to be comfortable creating the image I have in my head for an art piece. Share tips for students to get the most out of your class. • Relax and remember to breathe. • Whenever you have something break when you're working with glass, it's okay. So what? We'll make it again. Never let it discourage you. • When you're learning, push the limits of the material as far as you can. If you don't, you'll be constrained and your work will suffer for it. • Above all else, have FUN! |
