Dear Voornaam

Have you heard of FAIRification, or the process of making data FAIR?

In our latest Research with Integrity column, Andrew Porter (Research Integrity and Training Adviser at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute) and Kate Kamieniecka (Lead Data Steward Trainer, ELIXIR-UK Fellowship) get into how and why to make your data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR).

Most cancer researchers are now data scientists in a way undreamt of 40 years ago. This combined with the tight demands placed on researchers time means that the FAIR principles are too often not prioritised.

Find out why you should apply FAIR data principles for research in our latest blog.

IAN WALKER REFLECTS ON HEALTH AND CANCER INEQUALITIES

With more than 30,000 extra cases of cancer in the UK each year attributed to socio-economic variation, there is clearly much work to do in this area.

Writing in Cancer News, Ian Walker, our Executive Director of Policy, Information and Communications, talks about the work hes leading to influence government, make our About Cancer pages more accessible to different communities and spread best practice to healthcare organisations and professionals.

TOPOGRAPHY OF MUTATIONAL SIGNATURES IN HUMAN CANCER

Burak Otlu, Ludmil B. Alexandrov and colleagues have published results showing that mutations imprinted by mutational signatures are affected by topographical genomic features.

The new study in Cell Reports describes how they integrated mutations from 5,120 whole-genome-sequenced tumours from 40 cancer types with 516 topographical features.

They evaluated the effect of nucleosome occupancy, histone modifications, CTCF binding, replication timing, transcription/replication strand asymmetries, genic versus intergenic regions and strand-coordinated mutagenesis on the cancer-specific accumulation of mutations from mutagenic processes.

The findings from the Cancer Grand Challenges Mutographs team have been added to the COSMIC signatures database, providing a comprehensive online resource for exploring the interactions between mutational signatures and topographical features within and across cancer types.

FIRST PATIENT DOSED WITH SOSEI HEPTARES NOVEL CANCER IMMUNOTHERAPY DRUG

The first patient has been dosed in the Phase 1/2a trial carried out by our Centre for Drug Development to investigate HTL0039732s effect on patient survival. The drug selectively blocks the EP4 prostaglandin receptor associated with tumour cell growth and immune evasion.

The drug is a potential candidate for patients with a range of cancers including colorectal, gastroesophageal, head and neck and prostate cancer. If successful, it will bring effective treatment closer to these underserved patient populations.
