| | The Cancer Research UK National Biomarker Centre brings together expertise from across Manchester to discover, develop, validate and implement biomarkers to optimise treatment and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. To mark its opening, the centre invited patients, researchers, donors and others to a launch event at the Paterson Building last week. The guests had an opportunity to tour the new state-of-the-art facilities, hear about the importance of biomarker research and view posters about the work from the centre. Caroline Dive, Director of the National Biomarker Centre, gave the welcoming talk, discussing the significance of this world-leading initiative, which will receive over £10m from us by 2027.

Update to our policy on concurrent grant applications |
| We want applicants to have flexibility in which funding bodies they apply to, especially at a time when pressure to successfully secure funding is high. You can now apply with concurrent applications to other funding bodies at the same time as your Cancer Research UK application. Please let our research grants office know if you intend to apply to us alongside another funder. If your application is successful with both funders, you will only be able to hold one grant. |

| | 25 years ago, scientists showed that nearly all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). But that’s not where our story with cervical cancer research starts, and it certainly isn’t where it ends. Join us for a walk through our history in cervical cancer research over the past 70 years, from studies on cervical screening to the HPV vaccination programme and innovative trials on chemoradiotherapy. | |
| | | | Join Nada Jabado (McGill University), Steven Pollard (University of Edinburgh), and Adrienne Boire (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) for a panel discussion on brain tumour research. They will discuss past, present and future research, explore the latest developments and set a vision for advancing the sector to improve survival and quality of life. This is just one of the topics discussed at the upcoming Brain Tumour Conference. Want to join the conversation? | |

| A helping hand – a tale of robots, AI and accessible breast screening for all |
| Early detection of cancer can save lives, but many breast cancer patients living with a severe disability are not afforded this opportunity as there are no reliable alternatives to screening, with mammography requiring a degree of mobility and upper body strength. In our latest Cancer News for Researchers article, Roisin Bradley, Consultant Radiologist at York and Scarborough NHS Trust and Jihong Zhu, Director of the Robot-Assisted Living Lab at the University of York’s Institute for Safe Autonomy, talk us through their collaboration which led to an exciting initiative leveraging the power of AI and robotics to enhance the accessibility and accuracy of breast screening. Using funding from the CRUK Early Detection & Diagnosis Primer Award they developed an innovative approach which aims to address disparities in breast cancer detection, taking steps to ensure that more patients can benefit from early diagnosis regardless of their geographic location or physical ability. |

| | Investment in the biotech sector reached its peak in 2021 and ever since then has been in a downswing. Although there are signs that the “biotech winter” is beginning to thaw, it is still a tough environment for researchers hoping to launch a startup. To help navigate this changing market, seasoned life science investors Genghis Lloyd-Harris and Jonathan Tobin joined our innovation engine, Cancer Research Horizons, as investors in residence. We caught up with them to hear their thoughts on the oncology investment landscape and find out how the Cancer Research Horizons Seed Fund could help researchers get their discoveries from the lab bench to the bedside. | |
