| | The next deadline is fast approaching to be considered for the February round of our Research Is Beautiful image campaign. We'd love to see images that showcase your work whether that be a confocal microscope image, a snapshot of your day to day life in the lab or an action shot of you sharing your research with the community and forging new connections at a research event. Anything you think captures your work, or your passion for your work is welcome. The campaign is open to all scientists and support staff involved in cancer research over 18. Email us your images by 25 February for a chance to be shortlisted this month. Share your beautiful moments of science today, T&Cs apply. |

Video: Craig Thompson on the Warburg effect, brain cancer and the potential of metabolism-based drugs |
| In our latest video series, we catch up with some key researchers in brain tumour research to get an insight into their work and views on the field. Craig Thompson, a physician scientist who leads a research lab at the memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center gives us a whistle stop tour of metabolism and how it relates to cancer. Listen in to find out Craig's thoughts on the history of metabolic approaches to cancer treatment, where we are now, the exciting new therapies in this space and the influence of cancer metabolism on the immune response to tumours. |

| | I would love to see early detection as the ‘place to be’ for researchers, care providers, and our societies |
| - Michael Baumann, the Chairman and Scientific Director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). “Over the next decade, the goal for the early detection field should be to establish a higher level of evidence-based screening methods for targeted risk populations with improved accuracy and lower barriers to access.” As DKFZ joins the International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) for its exciting next phase, we caught up with Michael to talk about the complexities and excitement of the early detection field.

#CRUKFunded research discovers extracellular matrix influences metastasis |
| A team led by CRUK-funded Senior Fellow Victoria Sanz Moreno (The Institute of Cancer Research) and Oscar Maiques (Barts Cancer Institute, QMUL) have published a paper in Nature Communications on how the extracellular matrix (ECM) controls tumour dissemination. The team analysed ECM in human and mouse tumours and found, using digital pathology and spatial biology, that cancer cells at the invasive front interact with a uniquely organised ECM, which influences their shape, movement and fate. This research shows how much cancer relies on the scaffolding around it to move and spread and opens new avenues for treating cancer early. |

Reporting back from Syracuse: International Certificate Course in Translational Medicine |
| The Eureka Institute’s International Certificate Course in Translational Medicine brings together researchers and industry experts in the Sicilian city of Syracuse to help bridge the gap between academic discovery and patient benefit. Joy Shih from Cancer Research Horizons’ Search and Evaluation team reports back. Multi-day case studies enabled participants to work through highly applicable scenarios and address the challenges that arise in translational medicine. One-to-one speed consultancy sessions let them gather knowledge from multiple experts. During the grand debate, participants assumed the roles of various stakeholders along the translational journey and advocated for their priorities. |
