| | We will be introducing a new funding scheme this autumn to support more high-quality clinical research that addresses key clinical questions while enhancing understanding of biological mechanisms. Opening in September 2024, this new scheme replaces our current clinical funding schemes with a single, scalable scheme composed of three interconnected modules: clinical trials, experimental medicine and sample collection. We want to encourage bold and innovative clinical research that also advances biological understandings, and we hope this modular approach will allow researchers to ask for what they need, to do the research that they want to do. This new funding scheme, and our refreshed clinical research statement of intent that sits alongside it, have been shaped by our clinical research community. We thank those who took part in this consultation and welcome feedback as it evolves. We look forward to receiving ideas that can help bridge the gap between discovery science and clinical research in patients. |

| Introducing our new clinical research funding and statement of intent |
| Clinical trials are the pinnacle of cancer research to evaluate breakthroughs in discovery science and determine if they’re effective in treating cancer. Following our research strategy refresh in 2022, our new clinical research statement of intent emphasises asking mechanistic questions within our trials to advance our biological understanding of cancer and treatments. Our Head of Clinical Research, Graham Cadwallader writes about the changes we’re making to the way we fund clinical research, which will provide flexible, modular and scalable funding that makes it easier for clinicians and discovery researchers to collaborate.

| | The Cancer Research Horizons Innovation Summit arrives in Edinburgh on 12 November. This is a great opportunity to explore how to translate your discoveries into patient benefit and the potential for innovation by harnessing the power of AI. You’ll hear from field-leading speakers and thought-provoking panellists and connect with the entrepreneurial community. You’ll also have the chance to build your network and enhance your business skills.

| | | | This year’s event will feature Rebecca Fitzgerald and Sarah Mazzilli who will co-chair a session on how biology is informing early detection. Nima Nabavizadeh and Allan Hackshaw will also chair a session sharing insights on screening trial design, the value of the patient voice and the detection technologies that are making their way to our clinics. Secure your spot at our conference to be part of exciting conversations in the cancer early detection research sphere. Follow #EDxConf24 on socials to keep up to date with our agenda. | |
