Funding renewed for our Senior Research Nurses network |
| After a successful independent review, funding for our Senior Research Nurses network has been renewed for the next five years. We’ll be investing almost £6m in funding to support the national team of 15 nurses, located in hospitals across the UK. The expert network works with colleagues to provide leadership in research and engage with the research and clinical workforce both locally and nationally to support the delivery of high-quality cancer trials within the NHS. It promotes a patient-centred and inclusive research environment to improve patient care. Ben Hood, Senior Research Nurse in Newcastle, talks to us about his changing role in trial delivery, some of the challenges post-pandemic, as well as career highlights and hopes for the future. |

A multicentre consortium to study poor survival cancers |
| Christopher Peters, Rebecca Fitzgerald and colleagues have reflected on 10 years of working in a multicentre consortium to better understand oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The CRUK-funded Oesophageal Cancer Clinical and Molecular Stratification (OCCAMS) Consortium has established a bioresource derived from 4,440 patients with oesophageal cancer, representing more than 44,000 individual samples from 27 centres in the UK. The team has demonstrated how a multicentre approach can collect data and tissue from huge numbers of patients, even when studying a cancer with low incidence. The paper, published in Nature Medicine, highlights 10 exemplar studies showcasing the breadth of data types and insights obtained, with further studies underway.
