Dear Voornaam
Research integrity training is becoming increasingly common, but the curriculum, training materials, delivery style, frequency and even who receives training, all vary from organisation to organisation. So, how can we embed this type of training in a systematic way? In the latest piece for our series focusing on research integrity, Dr Catherine Winchester, Senior Research Adviser at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute in Glasgow, takes a deep dive into the role of training. Catherine believes that it needs to go beyond guidance and policy to provide practical information and, crucially, it needs to be connected to, and aligned with, the disciplinary-specific context of each research group. When done right, research integrity training is an excellent opportunity to help strengthen your research and ensure that your work is reproducible and benefits the entire research community.

20 YEARS OF UNDERSTANDING GENOMIC INSTABILITY From a career-defining encounter in a lift to discovering the Fanconi anaemia pathway in C elegans to the biophysics of individual protein molecules Simon Boultons formative years shaped his translational mindset, which led him to co-founding the DNA repair company, Artios Pharma.
In our latest Cancer Research Matters podcast, Simon, Senior Group Leader and Assistant Research Director of translation at the Francis Crick Institute and Director of Radnet, City of London, admits that going down the path of translation can be daunting.
At the Crick, he is trying to create an environment where even junior researchers start seeing translation as an opportunity. |

NEW IN THE JOURNAL OF CLINICAL ONCOLOGY: IMPROVED OUTCOMES WITH PREOPERATIVE CHEMOTHERAPY As part of the FOxTROT Phase 3 trial, researchers at the University of Birmingham and the University of Leeds have found that patients with early-stage colon cancer benefit from 6 weeks of chemotherapy before surgery.
Involving 1,053 patients at 85 hospitals, the trial showed that preoperative chemotherapy produced substantial tumour regression and downstaging, reducing the likelihood of incomplete resection, and resulted in better 2-year disease control.
These findings could lead to new treatment guidance for locally advanced colon cancer. |
